 | FE engine builder in PA. -- Art, 05/30/2001
I remember a few years ago of someone who builds strictly FE motors. I recall he was in Pennsylvania but I don't recall his name or where in PA. Does any have a lead! |

 | edelbrock single plane -- bear, 05/30/2001
About a month ago i posted a message asking anyone if they had seen edelbrocks new victor style single plane. P#2936 for 4500 to 8500 rpm's. they finally have posted a picture of it and IT is beautiful and expensive. $600 thru jegs. that is still cheaper than dove's. I had to call for the price. Check it out it is At the edelbrock website.. |
 | CJ Air Cleaner -- Tim B, 05/30/2001
I read somewhere that the inside of the 428CJ air cleaner should be black. Is that correct? Or is it the same blue as the exterior? How about 351s? |

 | 428 Balancer / Timing pointer combo -- Ed, 05/30/2001
During the assembly of my buddies 428, I can across a discrepancy with the damper/pointer combo. Using a dial indicator and setting up# 1 piston to TDC, the current pointer indicates 6 deg BTC. I tried a damper off a old 390 to elimanate the possibilty of a spun damper but it indicates the same - This engine is being assembled from parts I have had from several years of 428 engines, Is it possible there is differences in pointer assemblys that I am not aware of - IE 428 vs 428 cj vs 428 scj. If memory serves me correct, I had thought all the pointer where the same. Any insight would be appreciated - Thanks, Ed |
| | RE: 428 Balancer / Timing pointer combo -- KarlJay, 05/30/2001
I was just about to suggest the spun balancer, but you tested it against another. I did notice on mine that if the keyway was loose it could make a slight difference, maybe yours is a little banged up. |

 | 352 Questions -- Steve, 05/30/2001
I have a '65 F250 with a 352. It is going to need some rebuilding soon and I would like to know if there is any difference between the truck and car 352s. The one thing I have heard is the pistons for the truck are lower compression. I have also read about low, med, and high riser heads. What is the difference and how does one identify one or the other. I have been considering going to a 390 but the 352 has done well so far as a daily driver. Thanks for any help you guys can offer. |
| | RE: 352 Questions -- Paul, 05/30/2001
If you like, it works for you, and you don't intend to do any serious pounding with it, keep the 352. They're a good engine for trucks, regardless of what people might tell you (the bigger is better theory :) ) Ultimately the choice is yours, this is JMO as I've got a 390 in my `69 F100. That's what's in there, so that's what I use.
As far as I know, you're probably correct on the lower compression for trucks. Everything I've learned from reading sources, and otherwise, shows the trucks with about .5 - 1.0 difference in standard engines. This is a guesstimate as I don't have any info handy.
High riser heads are very tall, with very wide valves, and putting them next to a standard head, you can't miss the difference. Best way to look for them, is by casting #'s. BTW: you wont be able to use them without the highrise intake. The intake/head mating surface is a different angle then with the standard low/medium riser. Again, don't have the specs handy, but I know you can't do it.
Built right, you can get decent low/mid range power and torque out of your 352, and you'll get a little better mpg compared to a 390. Alot of that depends on the tranny and geering, too. Can't help you with that aspect, as I'm just learning that stuff.
One thing I've been told, By more than a few people, is with tall gears (like my 3.25's) and a C6, a wide ratio setup in the tranny is the way to go, if you have a good low-end built into the engine. It makes it better/stronger off the start, without the hesitation. Kind of like a shift kit will do, but more durable, responsive, and less prone to causing problems in the valve body.
Hope this helps!

I've never seen a vin like this, VIN : 3d52zp166433 Maybe it's because it's a police car.
But, according to the literature, both Z and P are 390 4V, P being the Police version.
All my literature shows the 406's being B and G coded.
Anyone have anything different? |
| | | RE: 406 powered Police Car!! -- kevin, 05/30/2001
Looks bogus to me folks, as the code is wrong for a 406 and there is the little matter of air conditioning and the traction-loc was not out till 68. Now I know that the air could be added, but I would be skeptical unless the rest of the 406 components are there, special wheels, brakes, driveshaft, springs, and so forth. Reminds me of the "63 Cammer Cop car" HA HA that was on a few months ago. Its still a neat car anyway you look at it though. |
| | | RE: 406 powered Police Car!! -- Paul A, 06/04/2001
If the DSO is a plain 61, the car is just a regular 63 except for the 390 Police engine which anybody could order. It certainly could have been purchased by a police dept but it's not a police intercepter without a five or six character DSO. |
| | Here's a possible 1st clue... -- Paul, 05/30/2001
Quoted from the add:
"The only thing wrong is that it does need a rearend pumpkin gasket"
If Kevin is correct that trac-loc wasn't out till `68, someone screwed up putting it in there.
2nd, either the 390 4V was replaced, or built into a 406 Tri.
As for telling ebay, just how many people do you think lie about the stuff they sell, or are just ignorant of what they have?
Besides, anyone that would want to buy it would either
a) be knowledgable enough to know it's not what it appears, or,
b) gullible enough not to check the facts, and buy it because it "sounds cool" or "looks cool".
I've noticed no-one has bid on it yet. |

I'm looking for an O.D. automatic solution for an FE also. I know that Lentech Automatics makes a bellhousing for use with their AODE transmissions...... Not sure if it's available as a seperate part, don't think so. It's $600 as an option on their stuff. They'll sell you the whole trans with the housing for $3000 delivered. Let me know if you come up with a different/better angle on this (ie, bellhousing adaptors etc,....). Have you seen the T-85 that someone mentioned on one of the replies? I wasn't aware that FE's (pick -ups) had an overdrive option in the 60's......good luck! |
 | NEW FE cranks? -- etm63, 05/29/2001
The other day I was thumbing through an old F.E.C.A. newsletter (Sep/Oct 1999) and came across a small article about FECA, Blue Oval Performance, and Scat Cranks considering building some NEW FE cranks. The article mentioned that possibly three strokes would be available - 3.78, 3.98, and maybe a stroker. These cranks would be cast iron and would sell for around $750.
Unfortunately, my membership lasped and I never heard anything else. Has anyone heard about this or know if this ever materialized? Any information would be greatly appreciated. Thanks. |
 | 429 scj idle problems.... -- Chipman, 05/28/2001
I'm having trouble making my engine idle while in gear at a traffic light. It lopes from 650 to 750 and I have to put it in neutral sometimes to keep it from stalling out on me. I could increase the idle to 1000 to keep it running, but that's not the right way to do it as far as I'm concerned. I have no vacuum leaks, what else can I look at to smooth it out? As always, thanks for the help in advance, you all are very helpful....
 |
| | RE: 429 scj idle problems.... -- richard, 05/29/2001
as i recall the idle speed for that engine from the factory is closer to 850 rpm. set it there but dont expect that engine to idle smoothly as it was designed more for racing than steet use. the combiation of the huge ports and large cam do not make for a good idle. |
| | | RE: 429 scj idle problems.... -- Chipman, 05/29/2001
I've got the parking idle set at about 825 now, but as soon as you throw it in gear, it drops to 650 and lopes back and forth from 650 to 750. Not that it's a big problem, but it's a drag to have to toss it into neutral at every stoplight..... |
| | | | RE: 429 scj idle problems.... -- Ross, 05/29/2001
Whats the timing set at? A good guess to start with is set it at 10 degrees BTDC. A little advance will do wonders for a motor at idle |
| | | | | RE: 429 scj idle problems.... -- Chipman, 05/30/2001
I did start to set the timing at 10 degrees, but got a lot of detonation due to the high compression and low octane available at the pumps. I now have it set at about 17 degrees, give or take, and still get some detonation, but not as bad. (It appears as though my original idea of putting in a 4 speed would be the best solution, but not practical and would ruin the originality of my baby.) I don't know just how much more I can advance it before I can't get the car started..... It's just now beginning to start a little slow. |
| | | | | | RE: 429 scj idle problems.... -- Ross, 05/31/2001
Isnt that backwards? 17 should ping worse than 10 BTDC.
Another trick would be to run the lash a little looser on a solid cam. I am not a 429 expert, but I thought they ran solids. This would be a little noisier, but will effectively make the cam "seem" less radical to the motor and let it lide a little lower. |
