Yes, I've noticed even the mildest of Crane's
rollers still tend to have somewhat high lift.
Now, 100 or 200 higher idle will sometimes
smoothen things out without most people noticing
that little difference in idle speed, and a decently quiet exhaust system also helps - like Walker dynomax turbo style mufflers which are quite free flowing yet quite quiet for a hp muffler - have them on my Lincoln LSC and you can
just hear the idle at the exhaust. Also check
isky, crower, lunati (at Holley) and compcams. I know some of them have some milder rollers than Crane when I was looking for a 351W. You might find a non-hydr roller that you could use Crane's hydr lifters on. (Matter of fact, I was doing some research for a warmed up 428 for a Cobra kit car and found a nice roller at Isky.) After all - solids clicking are a dead giveaway on a sleeper! Good luck.
