To verify that it is actually an exhaust leak, take a piece of heater hose and use it like a stethoscope. With it you will be able to hear exactly where the sound is coming from. This can also be used for tracing down other engine noises.

The right way to fix it is to have the exhaust manifold and the exhaust side of the head milled. I know that is not what you want to hear but if you try gaskets, they will burn out and you take a chance of breaking the manifold if pulled to tight.
